DAKAR, Feb 9 (AlertNet) - Sectarian violence which erupted last week in the southeastern forest region of Guinea has exposed the country's vulnerability to a major humanitarian crisis, a senior U.N. official said.

Three people were killed and 68 wounded when clashes broke out on Feb. 5 in Nzerekore about 500 km (310 miles) from the capital Conakry.

Vedanta refinery "pollutes" air, water in India - Amnesty

NEW DELHI(AlertNet) - An alumina refinery owned by mining group Vedanta Resources is causing air and water pollution that threatens the health of thousands of poor Indians, Amnesty International said on Tuesday.

Poor waste management at Vedanta's refinery in Lanjigarh in the eastern state of Orissa, is putting at risk the health of 5,000 people - with some already complaining of skin and breathing problems, according to a report by the human rights group.

LONDON (AlertNet) - The United States and the Dominican Republic could help Haiti recover from last month's devastating earthquake by employing Haitian workers to fill seasonal labour gaps, a senior U.N. official said on Friday.

"More than the immediate support ... in the form of money and some technical capacity, the big issue really also is finding some longer-term trade and employment solutions," said Salil Shetty, director of the United Nations' Millennium Campaign, which aims to eradicate extreme poverty by 2015.

I had a flashback the other day when I was looking at photographs from Haiti of 15-year-old Fabianne Geismar, shot dead in the head after stealing wall hangings from a Port-au-Prince store, crushed in the Jan. 12 earthquake.

The image of Fabianne sprawled on the ground, blood trailing over the paintings she'd grabbed, took me back to my own childhood in Nairobi and the sight of a 7- or 8-year-old-boy - probably the same age as me at the time - who was caught stealing sweets from a street vendor and was beaten and burnt with rubber tyres. They called it mob justice.
