Vietnam has long grabbed headlines for its rapid economic growth. As Southeast Asia's newest Tiger, its meteoric rise was eclipsed only by neighbouring giant China. In a little over a decade, the country slashed its poverty rate from 58 to 18 percent, Asian Development Bank figures showed last year.

Even so, millions remain vulnerable. In 2004, some 16 million people were still classified as poor, while another 28 million were eking out an existence just above the official poverty line. Meanwhile, the gulf between rich and poor is increasing.

Chiang Mai, Thailand - Resplendent in crisp white blouses, black and fuchsia-striped sarongs and crowns of fresh orchids, the group of ladies in their seventies and eighties look like they're dressed in their Sunday best.

They dance and sing, moving delicately as they follow the rhythm. Their leader, an 84-year-old former school teacher, stands in the middle, brandishing a lyric sheet and ordering everyone to stay in line.

Child malnutrition in Asia tops sub-Saharan Africa - UNICEF

Here's a statistic to digest - 30 percent of children under five in Asia-Pacific are underweight. In sub-Saharan Africa, a region many associate with images of starving children, the figure is 28 percent.

India, Bangladesh and Pakistan together account for half the world's underweight children, says the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) in its first regional report on child mortality, released this month.
