Two million Pakistanis long for home

I've just returned from working in Pakistan's North West Frontier Province where more than two million people are longing to return home after being forced from their homes and villages by ongoing violence.

They are caught in the crossfire as government forces fight insurgents. Seven weeks since the conflict erupted, the frontline is now shifting towards another troubled part of Pakistan on the Afghan border in South Waziristan.

I am in Pakistan's northwest, where some of the poorest communities on earth are opening their doors to more than two million people fleeing fighting across Swat Valley.

At times up to 100,000 have been uprooted each day, most of them taking refuge with extended family or local people desperate to help. And, as fighting goes on, the exodus continues.

The long, dark night of May 2 will forever be etched in the mind of 16 year-old Maung Khin Win. He survived Cyclone Nargis, which tore the roofs off homes, wrapped fishing boats around coconut trees and claimed the lives of tens of thousands of people. He says the days following Nargis have been almost as hard.

One year after Cyclone Nargis devastated Myanmar, much still needs to be accomplished to restore livelihoods, and the upcoming farming season is critical for the country's continued recovery.
