Why boosting food output is not enough to beat hunger

LONDON (AlertNet) - In a world that is producing enough food to feed everyone, why are one in six people going hungry?

Fighting rising hunger is top of the agenda at a summit hosted by the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) this week which is discussing ways to boost agricultural output in poor countries.

I have just spent three weeks in Northern Kenya among the Borana people, followed by three weeks in Mindanao, southern Philippines, partly with the Higaonan tribe.

The rains have finally begun to trickle down but they are late and still unpredictable. The prolonged dry season this year has already begun to affect this small cow-herding community in Kyarubangu village. Many families have lost their cows and faced food shortages. But these pastoralists, women in particular, tell me about the other less foreseen and far-reaching consequences of the drought.

Abdullahi is 14 and lives in Wajir, in north east Kenya. Every day after school, on an empty stomach, he chisels through 20 feet of rock to try to build a well and save his family from drought.

It's a race against time to reach water and irrigate some of his family's small-scale farm. As he does this, the children of his village die around him. This is Abdullahi's story.
