More online journalists in jail than print

It represents some kind of significant turning point in the history of media and dissent that oppressive regimes are now more often scared of internet reporters and commentators than they are of print ones. The newly released Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) 2008 prison census reports that 45 per cent of imprisoned media workers were bloggers and others working online, with 42 per cent for print, 6 for TV, 4 for radio and 3 for film/documentary.

This is the first time in the annual survey that jailed web journalists outnumbered all other categories.

Not too much surprise which countries are the worst offenders, but 30 countries are named altogether, and it’s well worth reading the details of those currently in prison.
