July 14 (Reuters) - Following are security developments in Iraq at 2100 GMT on Saturday:

* BAGHDAD - A U.S. soldier was killed by an explosion close to his patrol during combat operations in the east of the capital on Saturday, the U.S. military said.

BAGHDAD - Gunmen shot dead an Iraqi who worked as a translator for Reuters in Baghdad this week, his family said on Saturday. They asked for his name not to be reported out of fear of reprisals.

BAGHDAD - Seven people killed and 15 others wounded by a car bomb near a petrol station in the busy Shi'ite district of Karrada in central Baghdad, police said.

DIWANIYA - Five suspected insurgents killed by a U.S. air strike after they were spotted burying a roadside bomb near the southern city of Diwaniya, the military said.

SUWAYRA - Six bodies recovered from the Tigris river near Suwayra, 45 km (28 miles) south of Baghdad, including one that had been decapitated, police said.

BAGHDAD - Two bodies found in Wihda, 35 km south of the capital, police said. One had been decapitated.

KUT - A policeman was killed in a drive by shooting in front of his home in the southern city of Kut, police said.

MADAEN - Former Deputy Iraqi Prime Minister Ahmed Chalabi survived an assassination attempt in Madaen, 45 km south of Baghdad, a Chalabi aide said.

BAQUBA - At least six suspected insurgents killed by a U.S. air strike on Saturday in a raid near Baquba, north of Baghdad, the military said. It said the fighters initially used several women and children as shields, but then released them.

BAGHDAD - A senior Iraqi civil servant was killed in a drive by shooting in the northern Baghdad district of Shaab, Iraqi police said.

BAGHDAD - U.S soldier killed on Saturday by a landmine while on foot patrol south of Baghdad, the military said.

BAGHDAD - U.S. forces detain 18 suspected militants linked to bombing cells in central and northern Iraq on Saturday, the military said in a statement.

BAGHDAD - A car bomb killed at least one person and reduced an apartment building to rubble in a Shi'ite district of southern Baghdad, Iraq police said.

JBELA - Eight Shi'ite men from the same extended family were shot dead in a pre-dawn attack in the mainly Sunni town of Jbela, 65 km south of the capital, police said.

BAGHDAD - Twenty one bodies were found dumped in different parts of Baghdad on Friday, police said.

ANBAR - U.S. Marines on Wednesday discovered 50,000 lbs of ammonium nitrate, a common ingredient in homemade bombs, hidden on two trucks at a vehicle checkpoint in the western province of Anbar, the military said on Saturday.
