II. Country Profile

National Staff : 190 (may 2009)
International Staff : 7 (may 2009)
Areas : 1 (Labutta)
On-going programmes : 5
Budget : 1,4 M€ (2008)

ACTED arrived in Myanmar in the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis and received permission to work by relevant authorities at the end of June 2008. Since then, ACTED has obtained necessary funding to support the early recovery of cyclone-affected populations. ACTED’s intervention focuses on the hardest-hit coastal communities of Labutta township and consists of:
(1) provision of income generating opportunities and rehabilitation of basic infrastructure through Cash For Work;
(2) support to fisheries and agricultural sectors;
(3) distribution of non-food items
(4) in the longer term, construction of low-cost housing
The collaboration with WHH and CESVI, two NGOs already operational in the country before the cyclone, allowed increased impact and coverage in the emergency response programmes. ACTED now launches on early recovery programmes, to replace of lost livelihood assets and provision of technical assistance to allow families to quickly restart activities, with a pilot project focusing on the specific situation of vulnerable women to promote alternative income generating activities. Although situation is getting better, support remain necessary: ACTED looks for new local partnerships to extend and improve its activities, and focus on new issues as reforestation (natural defense against storms) and professional trainings (fisheries, sewing)
